Jnanananda is the dream of Dr. G. Sundararama raju who was the first ophthalmologist in west Godavari district. He was joined by his son Dr. G.Satyanarayana Raju who was the best outgoing student from Mangalore University 1986. Jnanananda Ophthalmic Institute started off big on 13th of august 1989 with the golden hand of Padmabhusan Dr. P. Siva Reddy and Dr. Babu Rajendran of The eye Research foundation, vijaya Hospital Madras.

With the Academic Qualification of Dr.G. Satyanarayana Raju in both Anterior and Posterior Segment Disease of the Eye, this Institution had an excellent start and was able to deliver top class eye services with in the reach of the rural public.
This Institution Educated the Public About the Modern Eye Treatment through Radio Talks and Slide Presentations in public Meeting like Rotary Clubs, Indian Medical Association. This institute has upgraded the Ophthalmic standards Among the Ophthalmic Fraternity by Conducting state and national level workshops on Eye Surgeries. A Series of workshops were conducted as a part of this.
The First workshop was conducted in 1990 on Extracapsular Extarction and Intraocular Lens Implantation this was attended 80 to 100 Ophthalmologists from the surrounding districts. The faculty for this workshop was Dr.Babu Rajendran Medical Director Vijaya Hospital, Chennai and Dr.P.Janakiraman Asst. Director Vijaya Hospital, Chennai.
The Second Workshop Was Conducted in 1993 and was Attended by 110 Ophtahlmologists from Surrounding Districts and the Topic was ECCE Capsulotomy Techniques and Paediatric cataract management .The Faculty Was Dr Satish gupta of LVPEI of Hyderabad and Dr Hanumanth Reddy of Apollo Hyderabad And Dr.J.Vengala Rao Of Vijayawada
The Third Work Shop was conducted in 1998 which was attended by another 100 ophthalmologist and the topics was an update on IOL Surgery Small incision Cataract Surgery and Phacoemuscification and Foldable lens implantation. Faculty was Dr V K Raju from West Virginia University USA and Dr Madivannan Natarajan from M N Eye Hospital Chennai.
With this academic background this institution developed a state and nation wide recognition. The medical director of this institution participated as a faculty in many workshops and Conferences in the State. The institute had developed a separate Software for Ophthalmic Inpatient and Outpatient records called “NETRA” in LOTUS NOTES.
